I have just had a promotional email from Easyjet advising that they are offering a discount on their flights from the middle of June to the end of August. This has surprised me on two levels. Firstly because they have only recently finished a different promotion and secondly because this discount covers the school holidays. As any parent will tell you this is a time when any discount is rare because the holiday companies, airlines and car hire companies know they have parents over a barrel and they can more or less charge what they want (ggrrrrr).

The details of the promotion are as follows

If you book your Summer 2009 flight to Alicante now you can save up 20% off your booking, no matter which airport you are flying from.

The discounts apply on every flight from 17 June to 30 September.

Terms and Conditions bit

• Offer ends at midnight, Tuesday 9 June.
• Their terms and conditions also state “Prices, although discounted, may rise during the promotional period.”

mmmmm…..that last condition is a bit strange.

This promotion is highlighting the difficulties that the travel industry is currently facing. Numbers must be low if Easyjet is cutting costs over a traditionally busy period.

Easyjet are not the only ones who are showing that the credit crunch is having an effect on the industry. Alicante Airport passenger numbers are believed to be down by 350,000 (unconfirmed) over the previous 4 months. A popular hotel in Alicante is offering 3 month stays at the hotel for £10 a night, but you have to do your own cleaning and washing.

What this means for you at the moment is there is no better time to book a holiday to Alicante. Costs are coming down and deals are to be had. The dilemma for you the traveler is whether to wait closer to the time you want to travel and see whether you can secure a bigger discount or whether you should book now?

Nice dilemma though, hey?
