What Does Alicante Mean To You?
I have been reviewing some of the photographs that we took on our last visit to Alicante that I haven’t yet put up on our main site.
I have been looking at photos on one particular day when we were doing a walking tour of Alicante, taking in the architecture and cultural sights of Alicante. We have actually taken some really good photos and I am excited that they will soon be up on the site. The reason for this excitement is because the photos show a really different side to Alicante than most people think of.
I would imagine that when most people think of Alicante they would think of Alicante Airport, the beautiful beaches of Alicante, the Marina, the Esplanade and the great big castle that sits on a hill. Or maybe they would think - ah yes Alicante, you land there to get to the rest of the Costa Blanca. Well, there is a lot more to Alicante than just this and the photos I am ready to upload reminded me of this.
The architecture of Alicante dates back to the 18th, 17th, 15th Century and even the Moorish times. Further back than this is the archaeological site of Lucentum which is where the Romans traded (this is located out by Albuferta). In the old district of Santa Cruz the streets are narrow and crowded, yet extremely beautiful and picturesque. When you come across the old churches and chapels these introduce you to the gothic and baroque style of architecture. They are intimidating yet breath taking especially when you step inside these unique monuments of the past.
If you do get the chance, take some time to really get to know Alicante. Walk around the old Alicante. Take time to stop and absorb the past. Look upwards and really take in the buildings and architecture that surrounds you and try and read the story of Alicante.
