Monovar and Wine - An Enchanting Drive Out Into The Country
If you have hired a car whilst visiting Alicante and you want to make the most of it by getting out and about within the Costa Blanca then we can recommend some lovely drives.
This is the first of my recommendations and it is a drive out to Monovar. It’s about 45 minutes out from Alicante. You will need about 2 hours to see the town and if you want to explore the surrounding wine villages you will need about another 3 hours. So you can easily make a day out of it, take a picnic aswell as there are some stunning views in this area of vineyards.
The red wine from Monovar used to be the most sought after in Europe and this was the case until the end of the nineteenth century.
Nowadays the vineyards of Monovar are not so well known but the Spaniards themselves do rate the wine produced by this region and consider its dessert wines to be of excellent quality.
If you are a wine lover then you will adore this place. The character of the wine comes from the way the wine is produced here. Initially the grapes are crushed and the rose is fermented from the must drawn off this . To produce the red wine it is derived from taking this first batch of must and grapes and then mixing with a second one prior to fermentation. You can find out more about the fermentation processes in Monovar.
Once you have visited the town you can visit some other wine villages such as Hondon, Manar and La Romana which are close by.
It is possible to taste the wine, if you are driving then I wouldn’t recommend this but if you are a passenger - go for it!
Take the N330 out from Alicante to Novelda. Then take the CV835 to Monovar. From here continue on the CV83 to Xinoria, Hondon, Manar, El Xilornet, Culebron to Pinoso. Then come south through El Rodriguillo, then start making your way back to Novelda via Alguena, Las Cuevas and then back to Alicante.
This circular journey will take you around the area known as Serra del Reclot.
A lovely day out…….. but remember not to drink and drive.
