Alicante Central Market

Alicante Central Market

Address: Avda. Alfonso X el Sabio, 1

Opening hours: Monday to Saturday: 7.30am - 2.30pm.

This easily identifiable art-deco building was built by Juan Vidal Ramos between 1911 and 1912 on top of the old 18th Century walls that once surrounded Alicante. The floor plan is rectangular but as the photograph below shows it has a circular appendage topped by a semispherical cuppola known as "La Rotonda". The design of the building is very distinct and in it's day would have been of quite modern design.

The market itself is packed with a bounty of delicious food, including fruit and vegetables, figs, dates, fish, octopus, squid, breads and sweets. This supermarket is a hive of activity. It is bustling with the Spanish people buying their daily / weekly food and really gives a good view into the Spanish way of life.
