May 6th 2009, we made a trip back to the U.K., and due to a chronic back problem I needed to use a wheelchair.
We made a request for this service through our airline at the time of booking at no extra cost. Within 5 minutes of presenting myself at the check in desk, one and a half hours prior to departure as requested, a pleasant young man arrived with my wheelchair. As I was accompanied by my husband, we were able to make our own way via the lift to the departure lounge on the first floor.
At security I was escorted through courteously and sensitively by a female member of staff. As we made our way through departure lounge we were approached by a member of the special wheelchair assistance staff. They wear a uniform consisting of a yellow t-shirt and black trousers. After checking a tag attached to my wheelchair I was informed of my departure gate and told to be there half an hour before departure.
I did check out the disabled toilet facilities, of which there are many which are clean and spacious.
As instructed, we presented ourselves at the departure gate at the appointed time. From here on I was in the caring hands of a cheerful Spanish gentleman who sympathetically saw us through passport control, onto the hoist, into the cabin and settled into my seat.
Alicante airport is wheelchair friendly and I rate it highly.
